WordPress 3.8 and Solostream Themes

Alistair Barnett
posted this on December 13, 2013 11:00 AM

We have not fully tested any of our Premium WordPress Themes in WordPress 3.8 yet.

12/26/13 UPDATE: Recently I was informed that Solostream themes are good to go with WordPress 3.8. See the below post for full details:

http://www.solostream.com/blog/solostream-themes-good-go-wordpress-...

You may want to wait until you hear back from me to ensure compatibility. If you have already upgraded to WP 3.8 and are experiencing issues:

  • You may just need to upgrade your plugins (if updates are available) or deactivate certain plugins that are not shown to be compatible with 3.8 (go to http://wordpress.org/plugins/ to check each plugin's page).
  • Other possible causes include something happening during the upgrade to the database, permalinks structure, or file permissions for various files (both in WordPress and the theme).

I will add a comment here once we have tested our most popular themes (along with instructions on what to do if the theme you're using isn't listed).

Thanks very much for your patience!

Alistair and your friends at Solostream

Only problem I am having is that the custom logo in the User Login page is shrunk. Using WP-Bold latest version. How can I fix it? Thanks.

Love logging into a support forum and seeing right away a post on the subject I came here for!

Our hosting provider (wpengine.com) rolled us on to 3.8 last night.  Site is http://bioteam.net/ - so far the only thing I've noticed is that the front page slider and featured image area is blank/black when I use Chrome browser on OS X.  Site looks well and good under Safari. This site uses WPGenius.

This may be a cookie/browser/cache error on my end but I'd be interested in knowing if any slider/featured issues pop up for WP 3.8 based sites using the solostream themes.

Hi Alistair

I upgraded to WP3.8 last night. There does not appear to be any issue with the  live site - www.wharf42.co.nz

The main issue though is that I can no longer access www.wharf42.co.nz/wp-admin. My WP host could not find any obvious issues overnight and suggested I contact Solostream as our theme provider. We are using the Responsive theme. Hope this is of help. Would be interested if any other users are having the same issue.

Using WP-Blossom v 1.0.2.  So far no major problems discovered after updating to 3.8, but the slider that is incorporated may have a problem.

Thanks, Mike

Cancel the bit on the slider for WP-Blossom v1.0.2 and WP 3.8. It was just the add-to-any plugin that needed updating.

Hi Alistair

Just had reply back from my WP host re: WP 3.8 issue. See comments below.

It seems the update mangled the permissions on some of the files and set them to 666 instead of 644.
We have fixed the permission and the wp-admin folder is loading now. You will need to now to complete a database upgrade at this point and can do that by following the prompt in wp-admin.

Not sure where the problem was, but hope this helps in case anyone else gets the same issue.

Problem. The widgets work fine, EXCEPT when I go back into them, and open it/they are blank. In other words,  I have to reconfigure everything. A real pain that shouldn't be. Thoughts.

I purchased WP-Professional after updating my site to 3.8, so I don't know if the problem is 3.8 related, or otherwise.

Thanks

Apologies for the late reply, everyone. Please see below for my responses to your inquiries...

Adam: That's not being caused by our theme. Check the plugin or code you're using to fix that (the full "WordPress" logo used to show -- now in WP 3.8 it's just the "W").

Chris: Is it OK now? I checked your site and the slider is OK for me (using Chrome on Windows, though).

Peter: Thanks for the update. Great to see you're back in business! I find it strange that the folder permissions changed during the upgrade.

Mike: Thanks for the update. Good to know it was just a plugin issue.

Joshua. That particular error isn't caused by our theme. My recommendation is to do a manual reinstall of WordPress. Make a full backup of your database and site files before doing this. If you still have the issue, I recommend downgrading to the previous WP version and wait for 3.8.1 (there may be a bug in 3.8).

Chuck: I don't believe that's an issue with our theme. From which version of WP did you upgrade? If there was a huge gap between versions, that's probably the cause.

Alistair,

Thanks for your reply. Please excuse my ignorance but I could not understand what you meant by "check plugin or code you're using to fix that". I thought that custom login logo would be theme feature. I have not installed any plugins for this. Can you please help? Thanks.

Hi, I'm always up-to-date so it was the last version of WP7 to 8. The thing that I checked immediately was to see if it happened with another theme. Didn't. But I will take my time over the holidays and test everything and see what, if anything, I can find, and I will report back early in the new year. Happy Holidays to all.

Just updated my site with over 6,000 posts and images.  Using WP Clear 3.2.1 and WP 8.  Fingers crossed, all went well.  No plugin issues. Back-end and Front-end seem OK. Did a trial post, and all looks good.  http://nevisblog.com

Hope everybody else has good results too.

Adam: I don't know how you replaced the default WordPress logo for the WP Admin login page. Since it is a square image as of WP 3.8, my guess is you need to google what tweak is needed so your logo isn't distorted. Again, it is not being caused by our theme.

Chuck: Thanks for that info. OK, I'll wait to hear back from you. Thanks in advance for running more tests.

Mike: We appreciate that feedback! Good to know things went well.

Hi, I just installed the WP-Brilliance theme and on my site (www.nellecreations.com) it has a ton of tags at the top, and I can't seem to find where to remove them.

Thanks,

Okay, So I figured out the tags issue and my last questions are:

  1. How can I make my Blog Title image center?
  2. Can I remove the second bar under the blog title image?
  3. How can I get my slider to start showing up with images?

Once again my site is www.nellecreations.com for reference and can be contacted at [redacted]

JenL: Going forward, please create a new topic in the appropriate theme forum. This thread is only for WordPress upgrade questions/issues.

Thanks for letting us know you figured out the tags issue.

  1. Open custom.css and add #logo { text-align:center; } to the bottom
  2. In the same custom stylesheet, add #subheader { display:none; } to the bottom
  3. See the Featured Pages and Featured Posts Slider tutorials here: http://wp-brilliance.solostreamsites.com/category/tutorials/

Sorry about that, but thank you very much! My blog header still ins't in the middle but everything else is fixed.

I believe I posted my other questions in the correct form :)

No worries. You're welcome.

Hmm, I'm not sure why I don't see any CSS code in your custom.css stylesheet. (I don't even see the #subheader tweak I provided.)

I added the subheader one, it's removed.

Where is the custom.css stylesheet.... the only css I have is under appearance and Edit CSS and I've been posting the codes into there. Not sure where else to put them.

It's possible the "Edit CSS" addition doesn't affect the logo area. The best place to add custom CSS in our themes is in the custom.css stylesheet:

  1. Go to Appearance -> Editor
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click "custom.css" (on right under Styles)
  3. Make changes then click 'Update File'

I am getting this error after upgrading (Running WP-Glide):

Warning: Illegal string offset 'video_embed' in /public_html/wp-content/themes/wp-glide_basic/features.php on line 62

I checked and all of my plugins are up to date.

Eric: I'm not sure what would cause that after the upgrade. Where do you see it? Just tested WP-Glide in WP 3.8.1 on my end and things are OK.

I wonder if you have "debug" mode enabled. If so, disable it. See here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress

Alistair, I saw it in the slideshow on the front page. I reinstalled the 3.8.1 update and it seems to have cleared up. Maybe there was just something wrong in my original download. I will let you know if to returns.

Thanks

Hi Kim: It looks like you're attempting to install the theme from the Plugins tab. What you need to do is install in from the Themes tab:

  1. When viewing the WordPress Dashboard, go to Appearance >> Themes
  2. Click “Install Themes” (big tab at top)
  3. Click “Upload”
  4. Click “Choose File” then navigate to where you downloaded the theme .zip file; click “Open”
  5. Click “Install Now”
  6. When done installing, click “Activate”
  7. That’s it!

You will want to view the install and setup guide as well as other tutorials here (also linked from Solostream Member's Area):

I uploaded 3.8.1 WP and have two problems (this is my site - http://www.MainelyPortland.com).  The featured photo gallery will not display and the featured video (from YouTube) will not display.  The Recent YouTube video widget does not work.  How can I do about this......thanks

I want to add a few more things to the above post.  On a mobile device (HTC 1), the top line of navigation is no longer appearing.  I was just before I did this upgrade.  My theme is WP-Clear.

Okay, one more thing on this issue - I have exhausted my technical knowledge!  I contacted Hostgator.....they do not support WP 3.8.1 - so this might be the issue.  Funny, I am using Hostgator because they were referred to me by  Alistair a couple of years ago.

Hi Michael,

Things look OK to me now. Was the issue a plugin conflict?

I contacted Hostgator.....they do not support WP 3.8.1 - so this might be the issue.

By "support" I'm guessing you mean they don't provide troubleshooting of WordPress itself? It might just depend on who you talk to over there.

Funny, I am using Hostgator because they were referred to me by  Alistair a couple of years ago.

Perhaps things have changed. Still, I use them for my personal sites.

I was told on a chat line that Hostgator did not support 3.8.1 - so I'm not sure what that meant.  The reason that I asked that question was because the photo galleries, featured videos and recent you tube videos would not display.

I'm not sure why these would be creating a conflict.........so I had Hostgator reinstall an older copy of the site that had WP 3.5 instead.  Does this make sense?

I am trying to get to the bottom of this.  I am only using plugins that basically come with WP Clear - Akismet, All in One Seo, Get the Image, Google Anlaytics, Hello Dolly, Jet Pak, Use Google Libraries, Word Press Popular Post, WP Super Cache............which of these would not be compatible with WP3.8.1 - if my theme is compatible with 3.8.1?

What was not working was the photo gallery and anything to do with YouTube............no one has any similar problem?

Okay, me again.....can you give me any insight as to what would be the plugin conflict that would cause:

1. The top navigation not to appear on a mobile device

2. The photo gallery not to render

3. The YouTube Widgets not to work and the Featured Video page not to work

I got a note from Hostgatorr telling me that the theme should work.and they support the latest WP update.

Michael: Regarding this...

I am only using plugins that basically come with WP Clear - Akismet, All in One Seo, Get the Image, Google Anlaytics, Hello Dolly, Jet Pak, Use Google Libraries, Word Press Popular Post, WP Super Cache

From that list the only one WP-Clear has built-in support for is Wordpress Popular Posts. Here is my suggestion for the rest:

  • Akismet -> Keep activated, if you have a valid subscription
  • All in One SEO Pack -> Keep activated or use WordPress SEO by Yoast instead
  • Get the Image -> Deactivate (plugin is built-in to the theme)
  • Google Analytics -> OK
  • Hello Dolly -> Keep activated if you want (not needed)
  • Jetpack -> Can cause a conflict with sliders (looks like they're working now, great)
  • Use Google Libraries -> May not be needed
  • WP Super Cache -> OK

Alistar,

I wanted to report that I deactived the plugins you suggested and things seem to be working.  Should I go do and delete Get the Image and JetPak and Google Libraries?

Great, Michael. Thanks for the update.

Yes, go ahead and delete those plugins. You can always reinstall if you want them in the future.
